In
an earlier time, we would have understood more clearly the role
ethics plays in determining our effectiveness as leaders, infusing
strength and trust into our relationships, and building confidence
in our ability to plan for a better future. The word ethics
derives from the classical Greek terms ethos and ta ethika.
To the ancient Greeks, ethos meant personal character, and ta
ethika signified investigation into the virtuous life—the
right way to live. Unfortunately, in more recent times, we have
come to think of ethics in terms of rules, oversight and compliance
with established standards. But ethics is ultimately about relationships.
As
we build more effective communication within our organizations,
with our customers and throughout our communities, we will gain
insight into our reason for being. We will better understand
what our customers and clients expect from us. We will see more
clearly what is possible. We will abandon outmoded policies
focused on control and replace them with plans for building
effective teams. We will contribute to the health of our society.
