From the President - Think Completion,
Not Perfection |
  |
|
|

 |

Many
of us take longer than necessary to complete
the tasks or projects at hand. We keep polishing
and perfecting the product until it's perfect.
For some tasks, surgery
for example, perfection is a requirement.
For most things in our lives however, completion
is a more desired result. Think about it.
In the grand scheme of things, how important
is it that you have the 'perfect' article
written before you submit it for publishing?
Certainly, it should be readable and free
of grammar and syntax errors. Beyond that
though, does every idea you've considered
have to be included? Does every transition
have to be perfectly smooth? Do you really
need to have thought of and addressed every
counter point? Probably not.
If the point of publishing
is increasing your visibility, getting it
done and 'out there' is more important than
making it perfect. The sooner you release
your article, the sooner you can move on
to your next project - the next thing that
could have a positive impact on your business.
Think about the amount of
time you've spent (or even wasted at the
extreme), polishing to a high gleam some
project for which a 'rough cut' would have
sufficed. Imagine how many more tasks you
could get done if you stopped when things
were 'good enough'.

Article - How Will Your Year End? |
 |
|
|
  |
 |
|
It’s
hard to believe we’re staring at the last
quarter of the year. My, my! Time does fly when
you’re having fun.
OK,
it flies when you’re just working hard too,
but I prefer to see the more fun side of life.
I’ve
been reminded lately of Stephen Covey’s
Time Management Matrix from The 7 Habits of
Highly Effective People. In it, he distinguishes
four quadrants outlining the things on which we
spend our time:
-
Urgent & Important
-
Not Urgent & Important
- Urgent
& Not Important
-
Not Urgent & Not Important
The
way I look at this, urgent things are those with
critical, impending deadlines. You’re leaving
on vacation in 3 hours and have to get to the
airport to catch your plane. Important things
add to the quality of your life and the pursuit
of your long-term goals.
I
use this tool with overwhelmed executives and
business owners that I coach. They almost always
discover where they are spinning their wheels
and using their time in unproductive ways. They
then resolve to change their habits and focus
on their priorities.
Where
do you spend your time?
