Recently,
a friend and fellow coach, Farzana, shared
some amazing photographs with me.
Last November, astronauts
voted on the top photographs taken by Hubble
in its 16-year journey. Remarking in the
article from the Daily Mail, reporter
Michael Hanlon says the photos "illustrate
that our universe is not only deeply strange,
but also almost impossibly beautiful."
As I
viewed and pondered these amazing photographs,
I couldn’t help but wonder where my
life fit in, in the enormity of our own solar
system. I mused about how that system is dwarfed
by comparison to the universe of galaxies
that it exists inside of. It dramatically
shifted the perspective I held on the challenges
I’ve faced and even the moments of joy
I’ve experience. This
photo is of the Sombrero Galaxy 28 million
light years away (technically light years
‘ago’). If you recall from your
science class (I didn’t really), a
light year is the distance light will travel
in a year at the speed of 186,000 miles
per second. 28 million light years is a
long way back. You can view the rest of
the top ten Hubble Space photographs HERE.

Though
I’ve now come to grips with the relative
miniscule scope of my existence, I am still in
pursuit of meaning and contribution in my life.
In the last week,
I’ve given several presentations on a variety
of topics to a broad spectrum of audiences (women
entrepreneurs, Head Start workers, teenage girls
and their moms, HR staff and managers). As I prepared
for those presentations, I added a new aspect
to my mission. It’s always been there, but
was rarely articulated.
My commitment is
that:
“All
people are expressing their unique gifts and delivering
on their destiny, and organizations honor those
gifts in the pursuit of their mission”.
For quite a while,
I’ve been focused on people living fulfilled
lives. I’ve always believed in how critical
it is to our human spirit to express our personal
purpose. I’ve just recently realized that
the coaching and training work I do is designed
to blend the accomplishment of business goals
with the personal goals of the employees who will
be making those goals happen.
I’d been
asked to deliver my Rejuvenation, Renewal &
Balance workshop a couple of times this month.
It seems that many people are taking time at the
beginning of this new year, to contemplate their
future. They desire an increased sense of control
and purpose; a deeper sense of significance and
impact; a more powerful expression of self.
I offer these questions
from the workshop for your consideration and reflection…
- What
in your life needs renewal?
-
What are you tolerating at home and at work?
-
If you were truly happy about everything that
is important to you, what would be different?
-
What actions must you take to create a deeper
experience of satisfaction and accomplishment?
As Robert Schuller
says in the title of his book, If It’s
Going to Be: It’s Up to Me.
Get going!

I
had recently attended a seminar in which the speaker
talked about the danger of trying to “motivate”
someone. At first, I could not see his point.
I was taught that leaders always “motivate”
and that’s how you get the most out of your
people resources.
I looked it up
in the dictionary and found that the definition
did not match my reality. Hmmm, definition says
“to provide with, or affect as, a motive,
incite.” Now I really was confused and looked
up the last word incite. “To urge to action”
Now that was more like it. To urge to action!
Onward and upward! Full speed ahead! Damn the
torpedoes! Lead, follow or get out of the way!
And all kinds of expressions that I have heard
over the years to “motivate” me. (USMC
Drill Instructors have a whole bushel basket full
of motivating language.)
However, the real
definition is “to provide with” which
really means that the action you take after being
“provided with” is yours and yours
alone.
If you are looking
to “motivate” your people resources,
perhaps they would be better served if you “cheerlead”
instead.
