This
past month has been a celebration
of Black History.
It both enlivens and saddens me
that we have a month dedicated to
this. African Americans have made
tremendous contributions to civilization.
I was struck by a PBS segment on
Percy L. Julian, renowned African
American scientist. (My husband
is the band director at a school
named for him.) Julian's ground-breaking
work involving the synthesis of
botanical enzymes produced ‘miraculous’,
yet affordable soy-based drugs,
such as Cortisone, and products
garnering numerous patents and millions
of dollars for his employer. www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/julian
I wish that humanity could recognize
and celebrate the contributions
of ALL people without having to
appoint special times of the year
for them.
But that's a whole other conversation.
Don't get me started! |

| My
book, 6 Keys to Dissolving Disputes:
When ‘Off with their Heads!’
Won’t Work is now available
on Amazon.com!
|
|
Co-incidentally,
my friend and colleague, Danielle Hampson
invited me to be a guest on an internet
TV show she produces. Raleigh Pinskey conducted
the interview and you can view the video
by clicking on the "Authors"
link in the left-hand margin of www.phoenixwebtv.com.
I’m
trying to improve my ranking on Amazon so
when you visit Amazon.com,
if you’re so inclined, order something
else first. (I highly recommend The
E-Myth Revisited series by Michael
Gerber.) Then before you check out, click
on the button
and put “dissolving
disputes” in the search
bar near the top of the page. My book will
be the first one on the list! Add it to
your cart and you’ll get both in a
matter of days. You might even qualify for
free
shipping when you order more
than one book!
If you’ve
been meaning to order a copy or already
have one and now want to give one to a friend,
I would consider it a personal favor if
you ordered it through Amazon.com.
I’ll even make sure you get an autographed
copy! Thanks for your continued
support!

Article - WHAT IS A DREAM LIFE? |
 |
|
|
  |
 |
|
Great
question, huh?
Well, unfortunately, I don’t have the answer
for you. Only you can really determine what a
dream life looks and feels like. I can share with
you what mine is and what I’ve heard from
other clients, but those will only serve as examples
of what could be rather than what you
desire. Everyone’s version of a dream life
is unique and personal to them.
For some, it’s
not working at all.
- Spending waking
days in the presence of loved ones – children,
spouses, aging parents, friends or partners.
- Spending time
in the presence of nature.
- Traveling, playing
golf, pursuing an avocation.
For others, it’s
pursuing meaningful work. Working productively
to accomplish substantive goals.
- Writing, capturing
moments of history to be passed on to future
generations.
- Contributing
to people and communities that touch their hearts
and need support.
- Bringing their
‘all’ to their area of expertise
whether it be technology, sales, ministry, art.
Still others yearn
to master their internal struggles.
- Eating well
and honoring their physical bodies.
- Surmounting
physical, emotional, mental challenges.
- Believing in
and loving themselves.
In last month’s
newsletter,
I shared my personal vision which provides profound
personal meaning to my life and helps me deal
with the day-to-day distractions, roadblocks and
busy-ness of living. I crave the pursuit and expression
of self-fulfillment and the privilege of participating
in the unfoldment of dreams fulfilled for others.
If you didn’t
have a chance to read the offer I made last week,
or just want to read it again, it’s still
‘on the table’ for a few more people.
If you’re serious about stepping into new
domains of living and taking advantage of the
limited-time, Dream
Life gifts I included, step out on faith now.
I’m ready
if you are. |

I first learned
of this particular concept of strengths and excesses
in the context of annual performance appraisals.
Periodic performance feedback, coupled with an
annual performance appraisal, is an integral part
of a well-run business. Honest appraisals which
inform the employee of his or her development
needs are critical to helping the employee improve.
They also help the business improve because its
employees are improving their performance. It’s
a “win-win” proposition.
Unfortunately,
not all appraisals are honest. The one for the
outstanding employee is easy to conduct and is
a pleasure. The one for the marginal employee
can be difficult because the discussion can become
argumentative and contentious. I have seen too
many managers avoid the tough performance appraisal
by simply deeming an employee’s performance
to be satisfactory and avoiding any discussion
of development needs.
