 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
This is truly an historic day.  Good friends of mine journeyed to Washington to experience the inauguration events first hand. I must admit, I'm a bit envious and can't wait til they return to hear them share how it felt being with over a million inspired people.

I've been watching CNN and listening to NPR for the last several days as all of the pageantry unfolds.  We're poised for 'the moment' the first African American is sworn in as President of the United States.

Think for a moment of the historic first moments in your life. The first day of school, that first kiss, the moment you said "I do", the first important promotion, the birth of your first child.

These moments marked passages into new terrains, opened new vistas.  On one hand, the difference between the moment before and the moment after, was minimal.  On the other hand, your world was completely different even though that difference had not yet unfolded nor materialized.

Those moments of our lives are full of possibilities.  With each, only time will tell, as life unfolds, what the exact impact of those moments will be. Yet, clearly the potential for great change is there and it is palpable.

I am incredibly hopeful that our country will live up to the potential of today's Big Moment.  I am hopeful that we each step up our personal game in taking responsibility for creating a United States of America that the world can once again emulate, admire and that we can be proud of.

In the words of the President, Barack Obama, "we chose hope over fear".

FEATURE ARTICLE – TRUE LEADERSHIP: WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROLE
One of the success factors of great leaders is their ability to catalyze the energy and skills of others to make amazing things happen - to make the rubber meet the road, as they say.  Some leaders are great visionaries but lack the implementation skills required to cause lasting change.

True change requires more than a compelling vision of a positive future, but also a clear roadmap and infrastructure to get there.   Here are some of the 'best practices' I've observed in the great leaders I've encountered in recent years as I've been speaking and writing about leadership.

1. They dare to dream big

Leaders envision concepts and futures that are unimaginable to most people.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Steve Jobs (Apple Computer co-founder) and Albert Einstein to name a few.

Your dream may not seem as monumental as theirs, but I assert that when the dreams of these leaders first appeared to them, they may not have been so immense either.  Dreams often occur to us with ideas as simple as "Wouldn't it be great if...?"  It's in the sharing and exploring that momentum builds and possibilities expand.

2.  They don't try to go it alone

Barack Obama, in his transition to power has assembled a team of experts to deal with the complex issues our country is now facing.  Even if you're dealing with much smaller problems, it's critical that you draw on resources outside of yourself.

Don't constrain your dreams with thoughts that "I don't know how to do that."  You don't need to.  You just need to dream your dream. There are other people out there with different dreams and expertise that will mesh perfectly with yours.  Your job is to share and ask for help.

3.  They plan and act

Change agents (aka leaders in the corporate arena) capture the hearts and minds of others but are also adept at identifying the exact steps it will take to reach the 'promised land'.  When leaders dream dreams that seem unattainable, people will be reluctant to follow them because the task, while inspiring, seems and unrealistic.  Make sure you break  your big dreams down into digestible, intermediate steps that the rest of us can wrap our heads around.

When you follow these steps, you'll be able to make the rubber meet the road with your leadership role and great things will ensue!
