Greetings!
The first day of fall has come and gone. The
days grow shorter and the temperatures in Arizona have started
to subside…sort of. The highs are still in the 100's but the
evening temperatures at least, aren't anymore.
Fall - harvest time. Agriculturally
, it's time to reap the fruits of our labor, cash in on our
crops, store away the excess for later times. Merriam
Webster offers a definition of "harvest" as the product
or reward of effort.
Sometimes I'm asked what Emerald Harvest means…where
it came from. It's kind of a long story, but here's the relatively
short version.
Several years ago, I was collaborating with
a fellow coach colleague in the development of a workshop geared
toward women and their careers. In a weekend retreat, we did
some visioning on our purpose and values and brainstormed on
possible names for our venture.
After several hours, we settled on Emerald
Heart. I later shared that with Shirley MacLaine (yes that one,
but that's a different story). She explained to me how completely
perfect the name was, from her perspective, because the color
associated with the energy center surrounding the heart (and
I don't want to get too deep here) is green. That validated our
choice even more.

Well, my aforementioned
coach colleague friend and I later abandoned our
joint project to pursue solo ventures and I kept
the name. Years later, my focus shifted to technologists
in the Silicon Valley and I just didn't think the
engineers would relate well to Emerald Heart. I wanted
to keep the word “emerald” because it's my birthstone
and I love the sense of wealth and richness it conveys.
I knew my intent was to help people improve productivity,
so I brainstormed on possible replacements for “heart” and
after spending some time with a rather large dictionary,
stumbled across “harvest”.
I knew immediately that was it! It
captured the very essence of the work I do…coaching
and consulting that reap results!

Article: Leadership
That Transforms…& Delivers - Vision |
 |
|

|
 |
|
As you may remember, last month I
announced that a book on leadership was in the making.
The title has been morphed slightly to Leadership
that Transforms…and
Delivers. Transformation is a wonderful thing,
but results in the real world are the evidence that
transformation has truly occurred. And insightful planning
and flawless execution are the source of results.
I have scheduled and held several
interviews with key leaders and am still looking for
other leaders to include. I am especially interested
in people outside of the Phoenix area that I could
interview by phone. If you know leaders who have touched
or inspired you deeply, please email
me and recommend
them.
This month's installment is on Vision.
“Vision is that dream you have for yourself and the world.
It creates a gap between the way things are and the way
they could be…A shared vision, especially one that is
intrinsic, uplifts people's aspiration. Work becomes
part of pursuing a larger purpose embodied in the organization's
products or services…or embodied in the style climate
and spirit of the organization…

Time
is probably our greatest asset and it's also our true
equalizer in life. We can be rich or poor, but we all
have the same amount of time. We also ultimately have
control over whether we will use that time effectively,
or whether we will let it run by us.
The laws behind managing our time are really very
simple. Managing our time effectively requires that
we first know how we want to use our time. Then,
we need to be aware of how we are currently
using our time. Lastly we need to develop
new habits and new skills that will help us better
manage our time, so that we end up doing
more of what we want to do, and we end up accomplishing
a great deal more of what we want to achieve.
Knowing How We Want to Use Our Time
What does managing our time effectively
mean?
