Your Performance Improvement Partner™ Update

January, 2006

Greetings!
What’s your dream?

Just recently, we celebrated the birth of the great orator and civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (www.thekingcenter.org). Undoubtedly, one of the orations for which he is most remembered is his “I Have a Dream” speech delivered on August 23, 1963. In it, he stated, “And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

It’s interesting to me that, as a country, we had to strive and fight for the equality of all in order for us to, in this new millennium, begin to honor and celebrate our diversity.

For those of you who might be interested, you can see a video of that historic speech at www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/Ihaveadream.htm.

Everyone has a dream. Again, I ask, ”What’s yours? With whom have you shared it? What are you doing about it?"

Message From the President

Dreams are the birthplace of and launching pad for the future. They provide the fuel for innovation and change. They provide the emotional energy required for overcoming obstacles. I was asked earlier today what my favorite books were. Among them is I Will Not Die an Unlived Life: Reclaiming Purpose and Passion by Dawna Markova, http://dawnamarkova.com.

The book is her own personal exploration into the manifestation of her poem of the same name.

I will not die an unlived life.
I will not live in fear
of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days,
to allow my living to open me,
to make me less afraid,
more accessible;
to loosen my heart
until it becomes a wing,
a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance,
to live so that which came to me as seed
goes to the next as blossom,
and that which came to me as blossom,
goes on as fruit.

Feature Article: Leadership That Transforms…& Delivers - EXECUTION
So how does one transform seed to blossom and then to fruit?

This series of articles, “Leadership that Transforms…and Delivers” has addressed many aspects of this discovery and revelation process. Our discussions over the last several months have covered leadership and values, vision, trust & integrity, motivational style and planning. (Review these recent topics in my newsletter archives). Execution is the next link in the chain. Actually, when I started writing this, I thought execution would be the last link, but having spent the last several months dwelling in this arena, I can now see that it doesn’t even stop there.

That’s the nature of critical thinking and writing, I believe. There is always more onion to peel back. What now appears as the next step is measuring and assessing the execution and incorporating what’s been learned back into the process and refining what’s already been done. (But I digress. We’ll talk about that next month.)

To execute is “to carry out fully; to put into effect; to do what is called for…” (Merriam Webster, 1994). Execution is the enactment of the plan, the discharge of duties and as such, an expression of accountability and responsibility. It allows for the fulfillment of the dream and the delivery of one’s purpose.

Execution takes attention and intention. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “The devil is in the details”. Great execution is all about attending to the details; doing what needs to be done and doing it well. It’s the “doing it well” part that often trips us up.

So what gets in the way of “doing it well”?

Act - don’t think! Once you've done all of your visioning, communicating, planning and anticipating, act – don’t think. Thinking conjures up fears and worries and a tendency to procrastinate (for some justifiable reason). Don’t succumb to it.
