Well, I've gone and
done it now!! Last month, I invited you to join me
in attending a retreat, How to be a Positively
Powerful Person, being conducted by Dr. Joel Martin
and Les Brown. I went and it was wonderful - powerful!
So wonderful and powerful in fact, that I announced
at the end that I would have a book written by next
August! The title of the book is Leadership that
Transforms and it will focus, in part, on some
of the concepts from the assessment, “ Are
You a Transformational Leader? ”, that I launched
last month. The assessment measures behaviors related
to key components of transformational leadership: values,
vision, integrity and motivational style. Take
assessment now.
This declaration about
the book being completed was a bold move on my part
on a couple of dimensions. First, those of you who
know me well, know that I'm not exactly lacking for
interesting projects and activities to pursue. It's
not like I've got a lot of free time to sit around
and write a book. But now that I've gone public with
this declaration, the threat of public humiliation
will, I'm sure, encourage me to find the time and resources
to complete it.
The second part of the
bold move was letting go of my extreme self-reliant
approach to life and any need to do this on my own.
As a result of having asked for support in this commitment
(imagine that!), I've received many great resources
that will be invaluable in the fulfillment of this
vision. One of my requests was for recommendations
for exemplary leaders that I could interview for inclusion
in the book and my first interview is already scheduled!
So, I'll make
this request of you…If you know any great leaders
that you think should be profiled in my book, please write
me and let me know who they are and how I can
contact them. Also, if you would be so kind to let
them know I'll be contacting them, I would deeply
appreciate it.
Stay tuned for
progress reports on the development of my first book!

Leadership That Transforms - Values |

As I developed the Are You a Transformation
Leader? assessment, I also formulated a 6-month
coaching program that reflects the key components
and behaviors of transformational leadership mentioned
above; values, vision, integrity and motivational
style . The program also incorporates observations
I've made over the years as I've coached business
owners and leaders in organizations particularly
around communication, planning and execution.
In the program, the first issue you
address is the clarification and articulation of your
values. Values guide every major decision you make.

PIP Tip |
Relate to everyone
as though they are big, bold and extremely capable.
Don't cater to what you (or they) believe are
their apparent weaknesses. Expect that they can
do more and they will. I read a study years ago
that demonstrated that when health practitioners
interacted with patients in mental institutions
as though they were mentally competent instead
of ‘crazy', their behavior and language became
more normalized! What would be possible if your
held ‘normal' people as extraordinary?
